You can place an ad of various types to generate visitors by adding content to your site. Below we have listed the types of ads usually available, though every company differs.

Basically, you have 4 main types of ads: Banner, Text, Products and Pages (storefronts). However, new technologies are being developed daily on the www. RSS and product feeds are being used to keep the content updated and I highly recommend them when offered. But the 4 listed here are most common presently.
A storefront is a prefabricated page full of products from that affiliate company. A storefront is usually reached via a text link. The landing page usually contains 1-10 items the affiliate company offers, and link directly to the affiliate's pages for purchase. The conversions on these pages is fairly high and worth the time to promote. However, not all companies offer this option, and you do not get to decide what products these pages promote. :(
Best Example: BBoss Web Design House has Featured Vendors and Featured Vendors 2 with Performance Products for your vehicles!
Worst Example: Here are some more examples of
storefronts that are worth checking out...

A Banner is a block of advertising in a variety of sizes. It can be anything from the image of the company logo, to a search box for customer ease in finding their products.
Usual banner sizes are 120 x 90, 125 x 125, 486 x 60, and the skyscraper 120 x 240. Each company varies in the sizes and types of banners they offer.
When using banners, make sure you do not make your page too busy! Each banner will have to make a connection to that server while loading your page... so overdoing it, will make your page load as slow as mine :I ...unless the information is worth the wait :)
One way to overcome the clutter, is by using rotating banners in any specific size, for specific affiliate companies, or for all your merchants that offer a banner in the size you choose. Linkshare and Commission Junction offer rotating banners in any number of sizes and styles, for all types and I love this option!
Usually you will find the rotating option at the bottom of the page, with the specific banner sizes and types at the top of the page in a drop down list. Just keep your eyes open and keep progressing through the options, as not all your affiliated companies enlist in this program or offer banners for rotation.
This is an example of an individual company with
rotating banners of same size:

Text ads are exactly that... text that the company approves to get visitors to their site. The affiliate company makes the text ads in .html and request that you do not change the code or text. So, when choosing the text ad, make sure to use it in a sentence that applies to your online audience for the best conversions. Marketing experts still insist that text ads have the highest conversions of all online marketing ad styles. Especially when used properly (see examples noted above in storefront).
Some affiliate companies offer their advertisers (those who run their ads...us) the option to create ads, and then submit them for approval. Once approved, you can then place it on your web site. Not before! They have right to remove you from their program if you manipulate their code without permission and run it live on your web site.

Product ads are the best type of online marketing content as it sells your affiliates products directly to your visitor! (In my opinion anyway) Product ads usually combine an image, text and buy button, or combination thereof, written in .html or in java script code, and you copy and paste this code onto your site! Only one click-straight to the product page for details and quantity for your purchasing pleasure!
You will want to use products that fit your site's concept and compliments your content. The best product ads are those that you personally use and approve, or plan to buy at some time (why not make the sale commission for products you buy anyway!).
Conversions are great when your site page is highly targeted and optimized toward the specific products you choose. As long as your site targets a marketable internet audience, that is. Often, the hardest reality of conversions is that you have to get the traffic to your site first to get the chance at the commissions, anyway! But, boy, if you get the visitors, this is the way to make sales!
Also, when picking your affiliate companies specifically for product pages, make sure they do not have a return policy, or contingency for completed sales and paid commissions, as this is the way I have lost many a dollar on the buyer not returning within 30 days to the web site. Wal-Mart is one of these companies, which is a darn shame!
